Removing Barriers to Economic Stability for People With Conviction Histories
The Community Service Society of NY (CSS) RSVP seeks to ease the reentry of formerly incarcerated individuals back into family life and their communities by promoting employment as a way out of poverty. In line with these efforts, the CSS RSVP Planned Reentry for Incarcerated Adolescents and Adults (PRIAA) and Record Repair Counseling Corps (RRC) were created. Even after putting their past behind them people with conviction records are held back from employment, housing, and educational opportunities because of their criminal histories. Many individuals endure a second sentence, not a second chance. If formerly incarcerated or people with conviction histories are to enter the workforce and rebuild their lives, these barriers must be addressed. CSS RSVP RRC works in partnership with workforce development organizations who serve this population. Volunteers are trained as record repair counselors to assist clients to request, review and to understand their conviction histories as they prepare for employment and to identify and repair errors if their are any.
