Latinos In Action

Over 40% of Latino students in Utah do not graduate from high school.  Recognizing this problem, Mr. Jose Enriquez, a high school principal, initiated the Latinos In Action (LIA) program at Timpview High School in 2000. The program started with one class of 25 students and has grown to 39 schools with over 1200 students in Utah. Since 2007, The AmeriCorps* State program has helped LIA to grow throughout the state.  AmeriCorps members serve as para-educators in the LIA classes teaching leadership skills, tutoring methods, and coordinating various community service activities the students are involved in.  The Bilingual students who participate with Latinos In Action are students who learn the importance of serving others, and are able to succeed academically in the process. As a Latinos In Action student, they have proven they can maintain and hold a high GPA. These students are known leaders among their peers at schools, and role models to the younger kids. Each Latinos In Action student provides approximately 100 hours of service as part of their classroom curriculum. Currently, the Latinos In Action students stand at a 100 percent graduation rate from high school and an 85 percent college entry rate.
