Empowering Latino Youth Through Service-Latinos In Action
The number of Latino students in the state of Utah is rapidly increasing, however, there continues to be a disconnect between them and their educational institution. Latino students in Utah have the highest percentage of high school dropout rates and the lowest graduation rate. If you walk into a honors/AP course or take a look at extracurricular activities, Latinos are little represented. Due to the lack of positive Latino role models in the neighborhoods and lack of support in the education system, Jose Enriquez initiated Latinos in Action with the intention of creating a K-16 pipeline to help students succeed. The mission of Latinos In Action is to empower the Latino Youth through service, culture, and excellent education with the sole purpose of graduating from college. This class that Junior High School and High School students take allows them to use the precious bilingual talent they poses in service to their communities. These students tutor and mentor local elementary students as part of class time and obtain about 100 hours of community service each year. Jose Enriquez’s program has helped break down numerous barriers that exist within the various Latino subgroups and within the entire school population. Students that are in program develop a sense of belonging with their schools and communities. With the help of AmeriCorps, Latinos In Action has been able to expand into 37 high schools in the State of Utah. Students are grateful for having a program like Latinos in Action in their schools.
