Leadership Through Service and Education - Latinos In Action

Latinos In Action is an agent of change in the educational system in the state of Utah, Washington and Idaho.  With 39 current schools and 12 new schools for the 2011-2012 school year; Latinos In Action has proved to not only be a great benefit to the children whom are tutored by our Latinos In Action para-professional students, but also for the educational system that seems to have some disconnect throughout the K-16 pipeline.  LIA has made it possible for these participating schools to form vertical teaming.  This program is a huge support system for these schools; and is unlike any other program out there because the Jr. High School and High School kids that are selected to be in this class; take an elective class that zeroes on leadership, service, and education.  In this class time; LIA students are bussed to feeder elementary schools and serve within these elementary schools by helping these younger students in Literacy.  Our LIA students are power because they have the ability to use their bilingual talent with these younger Latino students and also serve as translators for parents during parent/teacher conferences.  If you ask any teacher or administrator of any participating LIA school; they will affirm how amazing these students are, and what a great benefit they are to their schools and community.  Latinos In Action is power because our students learn that, it is not only powerful to earn a bachelors or post-grad degree; but also even more powerful to come back to their communities and serve their community.
